We built the tool first. The AI came later.
We're an indie team based in Canada. There's a lot of noise around AI right now; we wanted Slate to feel quieter: an authoring tool that's accessible, affordable, and reliable. The AI is there when you want it, and off when you don't.
On by default, and genuinely useful. Off whenever you like.
What we care about
Affordability isn't a footnote
We talk with nonprofits, teachers, and course creators from around the world. For most of them, budget isn't a minor concern. It's the obstacle. So affordability shaped Slate from the very first decision. We run the numbers carefully on anything that leans on outside services, like storage, bandwidth, or AI, and we choose our tools to keep the price within reach. It's personal for us: we know what it's like to count every dollar.
AI you can turn off
Slate works completely without AI. There's an Off switch, and it's the first thing you'll see when you open Settings. Not everyone wants to use AI, and we get that. When we do use it, we'd rather you reach for it because it helps, not because we pushed it on you.
Accessibility, taken seriously
AI has let us put far more care into accessibility than we ever could have on our own: not a selling point, but a way to make courses more people can actually use. There's more on our accessibility page.
Your work stays open
Moving between tools in this industry is harder than it should be. So we worked with one of our customers (hi, Dan) on LESSON.md, an open format that lets content move between any tools that adopt it. In the same spirit, you can bring presentations in from Canva, embed almost anything, connect your library to AI assistants over MCP, and export SCORM to any LMS. Work comes in, and it goes back out. And if everything else falls away, your Slate courses still live on as plain Markdown. Open them in any text or code editor, for as long as you like.
Privacy, and a way out of the cloud
Slate began in early 2025 as a private, offline Chrome extension, built because creators were frustrated with how little their authoring tools let them change. That instinct never left. For people who'd rather not rely on cloud tools or cloud AI at all, we're building Slate Builder X: a one-time purchase you own outright. It's still in development, and we hope to ship it this year.
Slate is bootstrapped, built with our own savings and many hours we'd otherwise have spent with our families. We're trying to build something that lasts.
How it started
Spent years in L&D technology specializing in enterprise content management: instructional design and authoring, UX and template development, and accessibility. Together, we built responsive web templates, custom learning path templates, and compliance APIs, serving 20,000+ learners.
Started Override Labs in early 2025 as a Chrome Extension born from frustration with limited customization options in Rise (now Slate for Rise).
Rebranded to Slate for Rise in December 2025, while our full authoring platform was already well underway.
Launched Slate in January 2026 as our own eLearning authoring tool, now open to early adopters. Start free from our website and share feedback directly within the app.
Released Slate MCP in February 2026 giving AI assistants like Claude direct access to your course library. 30+ tools for content management, review cycles, and analytics. Learn more.
Published LESSON.md in March 2026 as an open course format. Write lessons in Markdown from any text editor or AI tool, then import directly into Slate. Full spec at docs.slatebuilder.io/lesson-md.
Submitted Slate for Canva in March 2026 to the Canva Marketplace: convert presentations into interactive SCORM courses without leaving Canva. Learn more.
